NASA Technology Makes Menopause Symptom-Management Clothing Possible

All facets of human life are significantly impacted by the US space agency NASA. Technology transfers from NASA have historically benefited the private sector. The space agency has funded innovations that can lessen menopause symptoms as part of its most recent push to improve human life.

According to a press release from NASA, the London-based company Fifty One Apparel uses its technology to produce a line of clothing for menopausal women that regulates body temperature.

The clothing line uses NASA-funded Outlast technology to maintain its ability to regulate body temperature while maintaining the look and feel of premium textiles. It is named after the typical age at which women begin experiencing menopause.

The owner of Fifty One, Ms. Louise Nicholson, found that when looking into high-tech materials for controlling temperatures, these products tended to be cooling fabrics that ignored the cold flashes that frequently follow hot flashes during menopause, according to the US space agency.

A technology called Outlast was soon discovered by Ms. Nicholson during her research.

Outlast has been used in a wide range of products, including desk chairs and underwear. But Ms. Nicholson found that it didn't appear that any businesses were using this technology specifically for menopause. Some of the Outlast clothing from Walero, which uses the material in race car driver apparel, has been purchased by women who are going through menopause.

In the 1980s, NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston was looking for ways to improve the insulation of spacesuit gloves.

Phase-change materials, which maintain a constant temperature as they change from solid to liquid or vice versa, are being investigated by The Centre and Triangle Research and Development Corporation under a Small Business Innovation Research contract.

The company's first offering was just a selection of shirts in four different styles, which were initially distributed to customers in the London region through parties.

However, the company has grown to now provide customers from all over the world with online sales of shirts, bottoms, and nightwear.

A few of Fifty One's products that use space technology to keep menopausal women cool include turbans, facemasks, and scarves.
