ISRO aims to create a new, reusable rocket for the world market. Chairman of ISRO:

S Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and secretary of the

Department of Space, said during the Bengaluru Space Expo (BSX) 2022 on Monday that India intends to design and construct a new reusable rocket for the international market. After the GSLV Mk III, ISRO may develop a reusable launch vehicle that will likely lower the price of launching satellites. According to reports, the space agency will collaborate on the reusable rocket with startups, the space industry, and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).

According to a report by PTI, ISRO Chairman S. Somanath announced the plans to design and build a new reusable rocket during the seventh iteration of the Bengaluru Space Expo 2022. Currently, it costs between $10,000 and $15,000 (roughly Rs. 7,97,800 and Rs. 11,96,800) for ISRO to launch a one-kilogram payload into orbit.

Somanath allegedly stated that the only way for ISRO to lower it would be to make the rocket reusable, which would bring the price down to $5,000 (roughly Rs. 3,98,000) or even $1,000 (roughly Rs. 79,700) per kilogram. He continued by saying that the nation lacks reusable technology for launch vehicles at this time.

According to him, the rocket that ISRO develops after the GSLV-MK3 must be reusable. He added that the space agency would like to collaborate with business, startups, and its commercial arm NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) to develop a new usable rocket by combining these new technologies. ISRO has been working on a number of technologies, including the Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD), he said.

The development of a post-conscious and production-friendly rocket must take place in the upcoming years, he continued, in order for the space agency to be able to retire all those operational launch vehicles (in India) at the appropriate time. "I would like to see this (proposal) taking shape in the next few months," he said.
