New Zealand: Kiwis pay US$7.6 million annually for damaged or misplaced phones.


New Zealanders spend an average of NZ$13.5 million ($7.6 million) a year on damaged or lost mobile phones, according to State Insurance, a branch of IAG New Zealand, the country's largest general insurer.

The number is based on the 35,899 mobile phone-related contents insurance claims State received over the previous 1.5 years. Based on data from IAG domestic contents claims from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2021, the claims statistics. They are the thing New Zealanders are most likely to file a claim for with their contents insurance, based on State's claims data.

A recent statewide poll by State and Ipsos also revealed that while 43% of New Zealanders have their phones insured under a contents insurance policy, the majority of them own phones worth between $1,000 and $1,600. According to the same survey, 35% of participants had their phones fixed or replaced at least twice in the previous five years, and 8% had done so at least three times.


1,003 respondents were included in the nationally representative poll, which was conducted in September 2022.

The report indicates that Gen-Z is the generation most likely to go without a phone. In the last five years, 62% of people between the ages of 18 and 24 have had to repair or replace a mobile phone because of damage, loss, or theft. Only 42% of the general population, in contrast, has experienced the same thing.


Less likely to have had their phone lost or destroyed are those who are more mature. Only 24% of those aged 70 and older have had a cell phone fixed or replaced as a result of damage, loss, or theft in the last five years.


According to the percentage of people who had to repair or replace their phone in the previous five years as a result of theft, loss, or damage, the breakdown by generation is as follows:


18-24 – 62%


25-34 – 56%


35-44 – 46%


45-54 – 38%


55-64 – 32%


65-69 – 34%


70+ – 24%


The national average is 42%.
